Ingredients

  • 2 cup Grated bottle gourd
  • 3/4 cup Chana dal
  • 1 Teaspoon Ginger (cut into thin strips)
  • 1 Tablespoon Chopped coriander leaves
  • as needed Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Garam masala powder
  • Oil (for cooking)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (to grind)
  • 1/4 inch piece Ginger (to grind)
  • 7 Green chili (to grind)
  • Finely chopped onion (used in the method but not listed in the source's own ingredient list)

Instructions

  1. Wash the chana dal in a bowl and add the ginger strips and grated bottle gourd (no water needed). Place this bowl inside a pressure cooker and cook until one whistle.
  2. If the cooked dal is still wet, transfer to a pan and dry it out over a few minutes on the stove (no oil needed). Once cooled, grind coarsely, the way you would for vadai batter.
  3. After grinding, mix in fine salt, the ground paste, garam masala powder, chopped onion, and coriander leaves.
  4. Shape the mixture into lemon-sized balls, then roll each into a finger-length log. Deep-fry in hot oil until golden and serve with tomato sauce.
