Ingredients
- 1 cup Whole moong dal (heaped)
- 3 அல்லது 4 Boiled potato
- 3/4 cup Boiled green peas
- 15 Green chili (to grind)
- 1/2 inch piece Ginger (to grind)
- 2 pinches Asafoetida
- 1/2 Teaspoon Sugar
- 1/2 Teaspoon Cooking soda
- as needed Salt
- 2 1/2 Tablespoons Finely chopped coriander leaves
- 1/2 cup Chopped onion
- Oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Wash the moong dal and soak in water for 8 hours. Grind the ginger, green chili, and salt together with the soaked dal into a coarse, thick paste.
- Peel and mash the boiled potatoes. Lightly mash the peas too. Saute the onion in oil.
- Mix the mashed vegetables into the ground paste along with the sauteed onion, coriander leaves, sugar, and soda. Add 1 tablespoon of oil and knead into a stiff dough, like chapati dough.
- Take two similarly sized wide pieces of banana leaf. Oil the inside of both, pat a fistful of the dough flat on one leaf like a thick pancake, and cover with the second leaf.
- Heat a griddle and place the leaf packet on it as is. Cook on low heat until the leaf chars well. Flip and cook the other side the same way.
- Peel off the leaf and serve hot with onion chutney or coconut chutney.
- Note: if banana leaf isn't available, cook the dough directly on an oiled griddle over low heat, covered.
